Adding a Touch of Neon to Your Child's Bedroom: Ideas, Inspiration and Safety Tips

Shaka Neon Light for Kids Bedroom

Transforming a child's bedroom into a colourful, personality-filled space is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a parent — and a custom neon sign is one of the most impactful ways to do it.

Neon lights do something other decor simply can't: they bring a room to life. Whether it's a name glowing warmly above a bed, a shaka sign that captures a kid's cool personality, or a soft heart shape nightlight in a nursery — neon turns a bedroom into a space that feels truly theirs.

Neon Sign Ideas for Every Age and Stage

8 Letter Name Neon

The beauty of a custom neon sign is that it can grow with your child. Here are some of our favourite ideas by age:

Nursery and baby rooms

Kids' bedrooms (4–10)

  • Their name in their favourite colour — always a winner
  • A fun shape that matches their interests — a dinosaur, crown, star or heart
  • A child's initial for a classic, timeless look

Tween and teen spaces

  • Our iconic Shaka Neon — the ultimate cool-kid statement piece
  • A custom word or phrase that reflects their personality
  • A simple peace sign or motivational word above a study desk

Are Neon Signs Safe for Kids' Bedrooms?

Absolutely — and this is one of the questions we get asked most often. Modern LED neon signs are a world away from the hot, power-hungry neon of decades past.

Our LED neon signs at Little Abodes Interiors are:

  • Cool to the touch — they don't generate heat, making them safe around little ones
  • Low energy — they use a fraction of the power of traditional lighting
  • Durable and long-lasting — designed to be a permanent feature in your child's space
  • Handmade to order in Australia — every piece made with care and quality in mind

Safety Tips for Neon Signs in Kids' Rooms

Mount out of reach of young children

Kids are naturally drawn to bright, shiny things — and neon signs are no exception! Mount your sign at a height that's visible and beautiful but not easily grabbed by little hands. Wall mounting also looks far better than a sign placed on a shelf or surface.

Don't overload plug sockets

Our neon signs use very little power, but it's still good practice to ensure they're plugged into a socket that isn't shared with other high-draw appliances. If using an extension cord, make sure it's rated appropriately and not overloaded.

Never cover a neon sign while it's on

Neon signs are designed to shine freely. Covering a sign while it's illuminated — even partially — can cause heat build-up and reduce its lifespan. Let it glow the way it was designed to.

Keep cords tidy and out of reach

Cable management is important in any child's room. Run cords along walls or use cord clips to keep everything neat, safe and out of the reach of curious little fingers.
