Wall Preparation Instructions – READ SECOND

Welcome to the ultimate guide for measuring, ordering, prepping, and installing wallpaper from L A Interiors. Whether you're decorating a cubby, nursery, dollhouse, or full feature wall, this page will walk you through everything you need to know to get it right the first time.

Wall Preparation Instructions – READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLING

For the best possible results when installing our wallpaper or wall decals, proper wall preparation is crucial. This ensures a long-lasting, flawless finish. Follow these steps carefully to achieve perfect adhesion.

STEP 1: Sand the Walls

Before applying wallpaper or wall decals, lightly sand your walls using 240-grit or finer sandpaper. This removes any texture and creates a smooth surface. The smoother the wall, the better your wallpaper or decal will stick.

STEP 2: Apply Viponds Self-Adhesive Prep Coat

This step is non-negotiable.
Most paints—even those that seem fine are washable, stain-resistant, or contain Teflon additives. These create a repellent surface that prevents wallpaper from adhering properly.

Vipond’s Self-Adhesive Prep Coat is specially formulated to help wallpaper and decals stick to internal and external surfaces. It’s low-VOC, dries quickly, has minimal odour, and dries matte without altering your wall’s appearance.

Important Notes:

  • Viponds self adhesive Prep Coat does NOT replace proper priming and painting. Walls must be properly primed, painted and prepared first.

  • Prep Coat is essential for wallpaper and large decals.

  • Small decals may stick without it, but we do not guarantee adhesion unless Prep Coat is used.

How Much Do You Need?

1L covers approximately 14–16 square metres (sqm).
To calculate your wall area:
Width (m) × Height (m) = sqm

Example:
Wall: 3m wide x 2.5m high = 7.5sqm
Double that for two coats = 15sqm
You’ll need 1L of product.

Most standard walls will require 2–3 litres of Viponds Prep Coat. It’s better to have extra than not enough.

It is your responsibility to measure and order correctly. We are not liable for under-ordering.

How to Apply the Prep Coat

1. Prepare the Wall

  • Scrape off any flaking paint

  • Fill holes and cracks, sand smooth, and dust off

2. Sand the Wall

  • Lightly sand with 240-grit (or finer) sandpaper

3. Apply First Coat

  • Use a 4mm nap mohair or synthetic roller

  • Cut in around edges, corners, skirtings, windows, and doors

  • Cover the entire wall (even for decals—don’t just paint the spot where it goes)

4. Apply Second Coat

  • Wait at least 2 hours

  • Apply second coat using the same method

5. Let it Cure

  • Allow to cure for at least 24 hours

  • Before installing wallpaper, wipe the surface with a lint-free damp cloth, then dry

  • Prep coat must be completely dry before Wallpaper application

Extra Tips

  • Plasterboard / Gyprock walls must be primed and undercoated before applying prep coat

  • Renters should confirm wall conditions with their landlord before applying

  • DON'T SKIP PREP! it’s the only way to guarantee strong adhesion and long-term success
