Okay... it's finally happening.
We're about to start the very first bedroom in our new house, and I genuinely could not decide. Not "oh I'll figure it out" undecided properly stuck, three tabs open, mood boards everywhere, undecided.
Because here's the thing about wallpaper that nobody tells you until you're standing in an empty room with a roll in your hand: once it's up, there's no turning back. No repainting over a "meh" feeling in an afternoon. You live with it. Your kid grows up in it. So I wanted to get it right.
I narrowed it down to three directions, all built around the same brief — calm, sporty, timeless. Something that feels like a proper "big kid" room now, but won't look babyish or dated in five years. A room that grows with him.
Here's what I was torn between.
Option 1: Blue Plaid Tartan Gingham
Classic, sporty, and it feels like it'll grow with him for years. This one lean slightly more "prep school meets weekend sport" navy tones, that tartan structure, paired here with a charcoal upholstered bed, warm timber bedside tables, and a little pennant flag that just says Champ. Basketballs and a football on the shelf above finish it off without tipping into "sports theme bedroom" territory, which is exactly the balance I wanted.

Option 2: Plaid Gingham in Coastal Drift
Softer and lighter than Option 1, but with the same bones. The Coastal Drift colourway takes that plaid gingham structure and washes it out into something calmer more "quiet morning light" than "footy club colours." Paired with soft beige wall panelling underneath and the same warm timber furniture, this one feels the most timeless of the three. If you want a room that won't feel like "a kid's room" by the time he's a teenager, this is probably it.

Option 3: Gingham in Daydreamer
The most textured and layered of the three. Daydreamer takes the gingham pattern and softens it into a muted sage and cream check, styled here with a diamond rug, a timber bed frame, and little basketball wall mounts instead of a shelf styling moment. This one feels the most "grown with the house" rather than "grown with the trend" it's the option that would sit just as comfortably in a living space as it does in a bedroom, if that gives you a sense of how versatile it is.
The takeaway if you're stuck on the same decision
If you're standing where I was three tabs open, unable to commit my honest advice is to pick the one that matches how you want the room to feel in five years, not just how it photographs on day one. Sporty and bold if that's genuinely your kid's personality. Soft and calm if you'd rather the room age with them. There's no wrong answer, but there is a "you'll still love this in 2031" answer, and that's the one worth chasing.
